Do's and Don'ts
for Buying and Selling
a Used Car

Money Authenticity
  • Be cautious of users who make unrealistic requests, for instance, if a buyer claims that he/she can send a cheque or money order for an amount larger than the asking price.
  • Always check the authenticity of the currency when receiving payment in cash.
  • To protect yourself from being scammed, avoid money orders, cashier checks and wire transfers, also never transfer funds to pay someone in advance. Always pay after receiving the item.
Screen the customer
  • Be patient. Check if there’s anything suspicious about the buyer before proceeding with the deal.
  • Be careful when dealing with pushy customers, especially the ones trying to negotiate even before seeing the car.
  • Always note down buyer’s details such as a name, driver’s license, phone number, and address before agreeing to a test drive.
  • Leave if a different person from what you were informed over the phone appears for the test drive.
Take safety precautions
  • Always meet the buyer or seller in a public place where there are plenty of people. It is advisable to inform your family or friends before going for the test drive.
  • It’s safer to have a friend accompany you on the test drive. But make sure you inform the seller in advance about this.
  • Plan and verify the test drive route well in advance to ensure safety.
Beware of scammers
  • Make sure the payment transaction has been completed before transferring ownership.
  • Protect yourself against identity theft.
  • Do not show personal details on car maintenance receipts.
  • Don't agree to ship a car without the prospective buyer inspecting it.
