A highly anticipated entry level sedan model which happened to be the first of its kind from the Japanese auto maker was launched recently taking the name as the Honda Amaze. A lot of reports indicating the car's value for money factor kept pouring in prior to the launch and the case still continues, all of which threatened the segment leader Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. Although the competition between these two cars is very high, other cars slotted under the same segment are also being challenged and the next-in-line standing boldly to face the challenge is the Chevrolet Sail. Although the car was also launched recently during the start of this year, the Sail sedan from Chevrolet has managed to clock some decent numbers, marking it’s feature-rich and value for money factor as well. So does the new kid from Japan contain what it takes to eat up GM's Sail. Let find out.
Design & Style:
Hailing as a curtailed product of the Honda city, the Honda Amaze gets a contemporary style which is indeed appealing. Incorporating a similar front fascia as that of the hatchback Brio with minor tweaks, the Honda Amaze manages to maintain a distinct exterior on the forward section. A captivating design has clearly been made available in the Honda Amaze which aims to grab attention at the very first sight. Overall the Honda Amaze is a sure-shot winner in the looks department.
On the other hand, Chevrolet has ensured that equal amount of importance has been put through in designing the Sail sedan however the exterior portion is simply not that attractive over the Honda Amaze. Although a traditional stretched out bonnet of GM has been equipped in the Chevrolet Sail which looks catchy, side lines and the plain design of the rear section fails to impress one. On the whole the design of Sail sedan is at a basic level when compared to Honda Amaze which enthralls the customer on the first glance.
Hop into the Honda Amaze and one is greeted with the country loved dual tone beige upholstery that's exported directly from the Brio hatchback. Further the Honda Amaze acts as a cocoon of comfort serving generous amount of space for front and rear row occupants, going big on legroom and head room. The premium feel that's quickly grasped excites passengers on board the Amaze and being a sub 4 meter car, the Honda Amaze does not lose out on a huge boot space accounted for about 400lts.
The Chevrolet Sail is also great on comfort when speaking on the lines of interiors and one advantage over the Honda Amaze is the generous shoulder room that this car offers. The 5 seater also delivers reduced NVH levels and the build quality within the cabin is quiet superior. Although all of these factors keep the Chevrolet Sail at a higher level than the Honda Amaze, a smaller 370lts boot space of the sail sedan feels a bit tight and loses out to the spacious boot of Honda Amaze.
The Honda Amaze is truly an entry level sedan with splendid upmarket features tagging vital factors such as convenience, safety and security. Few exceptional features included in the new Honda Amaze are steering mounted audio controls, power folding ORVMs and driver seat height adjustment option. Airbags and ABS, both of which are found in the high end petrol variant of the Honda Amaze give a great support on the safety front however the option of ABS is the one that stays in the lower variants without carrying an airbag. Few of the other features found in the Honda Amaze are as follows: Engine Immobilizer, Air-conditioner with heater, central locking, tachometer, headlight height adjuster, headlight off and ignition key off reminder, key-less entry, rear power windows, front power window auto down and the like.
When considering the Chevrolet Sail on this aspect, the car does carry upmarket features and stays highly uncompromised on the safety perspective, having an edge over the Honda Amaze. The top end variant of the Chevrolet Sail equips more or less similar features as that of the Honda Amaze however a Bluetooth option is included in this car unlike the Honda Amaze. But what's annoying is the lack of steering mounted audio controls as that of the Honda Amaze. Safety wise, the Sail sedan equips driver airbag starting from the mid variant with an optional ABS. The Chevrolet Sail is definitely a worthy package when concerned about features on-board.
Engine Specs & Mileage:
The Honda Amaze petrol is housed with a 1.2L power mill capable of generating a max power of 87bhp and a peak torque of 113Nm. The Chevrolet sail houses a similar petrol unit of a 1.2L nature exhibiting a slightly lesser power evaluated to be 85bhp and a similar torque figure which is 113Nm as that of the Honda Amaze. Both the cars comprise of a 5-speed manual transmission however an auto transmission can also be availed on the Honda Amaze petrol version. The Honda Amaze wins the battle against the Sail on the lines of performance as the car is said to weigh a 100kgs lesser than the Chevrolet sail and excels in the power to weight ratio. This aids the Honda Amaze in accelerating quicker with a great pick up factor over the Sail sedan. As far as mileage is concerned, both the cars are reported to deliver 18kmpl. Both the cars offer excellent ride quality and drive experience. While the Honda Amaze is best on open roads, the Chevrolet Sail does its magic on the city's tarmac.
Both the petrol products range inbetween INR 4.99 lakhs to 6.6 lakhs (ex-showroom) and an auto transmission variant can be availed only in the Honda Amaze at 7.5 lakhs (ex-showroom). Although these entry level sedan cars discussed above excel in one way over the other, the buying decision is quite confusing. I personally feel that the Honda Amaze could be opted for if performance, exterior looks and space are ones primary concerns in buying a car however if features and interiors are the major factors on your checklist, the Chevrolet Sail is undoubtedly the pick that one shall opt for.
