An exotic car show to coincide with the first program of the newly formed Madras Exotic Car Club (MECC) will be held on 1st April 2012. 30 Exotic Cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Porches, BMWs, Audis and their like will be making a statement and the owners will all be seen racing on the Irrungatukotai race track from 11am to 1 pm on 1st April (Sunday) . The general public are invited to come, enjoy and experience the thrill these exotic cars being present in one place. The entry is tree. This show is being sponsored by Mr. Bal Singh George, who is the Managing Director of Golden Homes, a reputed name in the reality scenario Chennai.
Talking to the media about the show and the club Mr. Manoj Lulla, Chairman said that the number of exotic cars is increasing in the South, so there is a need to form a club, where owners can come and share their experiences, problems faced and take help form the club authorities. This club in the name and style of Madras Exotic Car Club (MECC) will reach out to all those owners who are passionate about their expensive cars. The club will organise events on the track, get drivers from Europe to train the drivers on optimal use of sports/super cars and also give advice on which car to buy next while providing technical expertise on performance upgrades. The club will also facilitate visits to important factories and tie up with other clubs.
He further added, “There are two reasons which are mainly responsible for the growth in luxury cars. One, luxury cars are not necessity purchases. These cars are mostly bought by people who are passionate about them. Two, the increase in social acceptability of luxury in an evolving society. With the new generation entrepreneurs / industrialists wanting to have an excitingly different life style, the market for high end luxury ears is bound to go up.”
Plans are afoot to tie up with leading automotive brands to offer special experiences and prices to this elite club, which will be free to members initially, but once we start providing real value to the owners we will charge a membership fee. We plan to do three of four events in this year and then increase as we see better participation ".
Mr. Bal Singh George, an avid car enthusiast and the sponsor of the entire show said "There are hundreds of super car clubs in Europe and other cities spread across the world. Surprisingly, even though South is supposed to be conservative, there has been a silent craze for super cars especially in the 3 C’s - Chennai, Coimbatore and Cochin".
When asked about what is the standard definition of a super car, Mr. Bal Singh George said, “”It varies from country to country and for me a super or exotic car is one which is capable of touching 300 kmph with at least 8 cylinders and a minimum of 4000 cc engine. Recent advances have made powerful luxury cars perform better but locus is still on comfort, luxury and exclusivity.
One important fact is that good racing tracks will help to boost the sale of super cars in India and the opening of the Buddha International Circuit in Noida is a step in the right direction. One must also make a mention that the service facilities for all these high class cars are available only in Delhi and this is a deterrent for people in the South, who invest a huge amount in a car. Like there is a growing market for high end goods, which is also reflected in the demand for exclusive flats and villas, there is also a growing segment of young entrepreneurs who would not hesitate to buy super cars where price is definitely a factor, said Mr. Bal Singh George.
